Incurring ta brain injury has devastating and long lasting effects on an individual. Although the person may recover physically, there are often cognitive or psychological changes that preclude him from returning to his previous lifestyle. The individual who is brain injured often has difficulty identifying these deficits and as a result is unable to accept his current circumstances. Recently there has been a focus on written material to assist professionals and families in understanding the cognitive and behavioral sequelae of closed head injury. We have been frequently asked to present our family manual to groups of people interested in head trauma. Oftentimes there are patients who are brain injured in the audience and we have become increasingly aware of the lack of materials written for them as opposed to about them. In order to meet this need, we have written a book addressed solely to the person with a brain injury.
