The Focus: Applied behavior analysis is differentiated from other social sciences by three primary characteristics: 1) The focus of the science is strictly on behavior. The practitioner implementing behavior analysis is not only interested in why the behavior is occurring but also if the behavior is occurring too frequently or not frequently enough. 2) The focus of study is on environmental influences affecting behavior. That is, an analysis is performed on the antecedent conditions and consequences operating in the environment that maintains behavior. 3) An empirical evaluation of the procedure applied to affect human behavior is imperative.
